Ashley Dickey, Registered Mental Health Counselor Intern
My “Why”:
In my life, I have always wanted to learn more about the human experience and how to make life easier for all of us. Growing up, I was seen as a “sensitive” child and recognized for my ability to feel things deeply. Over time, I learned that this is tied to my deep sense of empathy and wanting the best for those around me. In both my personal and professional life, I am motivated by the desire to create a more empathetic world. Life is hard! As a therapist, I pride myself on lending compassion and understanding to my clients. We are all fighting our own battles and should have the tools to help us along the way.
Making a difference through a positive interaction with a stranger, friend, or family member, is what gives life meaning. Humans are built for connection and compassion. My purpose is to make meaningful connections and live a happy life along the way. As a therapist, I hope to connect with my clients and accompany them on their path towards achieving their goals.

I’m also a self-proclaimed foodie and love trying out different restaurants (even if I am a picky eater). When it’s cooler outside, I enjoy going to theme parks!
My Journey:
I graduated with my bachelor’s degree in media communication studies from Florida State University with a minor in English. My undergraduate program is where I fostered my desire to connect with others and learn more about their stories. I worked for an on-campus publication, where I interviewed students about various events. Upon graduation, I recognized that my desire to connect with others expanded beyond writing articles.
The COVID-19 pandemic gave me plenty of time to consider what I wanted my post-graduate experience to look like. I felt a pull towards the mental health field. As the world began to adjust to a new normal, I pursued my graduate degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling at Florida State University. That program truly changed my life and helped me recognize my dream career, which is being a therapist.
In my practicum and internship experience, I worked with a variety of populations. I saw children, teens, and adults who were adjusting to different life experiences. As a therapist, I pride myself on helping clients nurture their emotions through changing circumstances. I enjoy building healthy, therapeutic relationships with my clients. I create a safe space for clients to discuss your experience in your own words. I know it can be a difficult process, but we will tackle it together! I believe we should embrace our emotions instead of shying away from them. I gravitate towards acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), which discourages us from shaming “negative” emotions. The more we resist the natural range of emotions, the more dysregulated we become.
My Favorite Superhero:
I have always admired Black Panther’s deep love for his family and dedication to doing the right thing.
